The German women's team expressed their disappointment following a surprising 2-3 defeat to Zambia in a friendly match. Captain Alexandra Popp highlighted the team's frustration, particularly with the three goals conceded from counter-attacks and missed opportunities in attack.
Despite being ranked 77th in the world, Zambia managed to score twice in the 48th and 54th minutes against the German team. Germany fought back strongly with two consecutive equalizers in stoppage time (90+1 and 90+ minutes). However, in the 12th minute of injury time, Barbra Banda's goal secured a 3-2 victory for Zambia.
"We need to minimize our mistakes," commented coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg of the German women's team.
In addition to the disappointing result, Germany also suffered setbacks as three players, Carolin Simon, Marina Hegering, and Lena Oberdorf, all sustained injuries during the match.
The preparations for the 2023 Women's World Cup have not been smooth for Germany. Prior to the defeat against Zambia, they narrowly won 2-1 against the Vietnamese women's team on June 24.
In the upcoming Women's World Cup, Germany is placed in Group H. Their campaign to compete for the gold cup begins with a match against Morocco, followed by matches against Colombia and South Korea.
