The World Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO) has recently released the findings of a survey conducted among female players. This extensive campaign involved hundreds of national players from six Football Confederations, most of whom are expected to participate in the upcoming 2023 Women's World Cup.

When asked whether they considered themselves professional players, only 40% of the respondents identified themselves as professionals, while 35% believed they were amateurs, and 15% considered themselves semi-professionals. Alarmingly, 66% of the surveyed players revealed that they work multiple jobs simultaneously to support themselves financially, often having to take time off from work to participate in national team matches.

These statistics highlight the significant disparity between female players and their male counterparts when it comes to pursuing a career in football. Furthermore, 29% of the players confirmed that they did not receive any financial allowances from their respective federations when representing their national teams.

These issues are prevalent, particularly in the CONCACAF and African regions, where women's football still faces significant challenges. However, even in the most advanced women's football leagues, a substantial gap persists between men and women.

For instance, it has been reported that Sam Kerr, a prominent female player, receives one of the highest salaries in the world, amounting to approximately $530,000 per year. Nonetheless, her income represents just a fraction of what top male stars earn, with the gender pay gap reaching a staggering 1/100 ratio.

These findings shed light on the hurdles and inequalities faced by female football players worldwide, emphasizing the need for greater support, investment, and opportunities to bridge the gap between men's and women's football.
