Thai Football Federation President's Resignation Prevented Amid Concerns of FIFA Sanctions

The President of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), Mr. Somyot Poompanmoung, has been prevented from resigning from his position due to fears that the world governing body for football, FIFA, could impose sanctions on Thailand. As a result, Mr. Poompanmoung will continue to serve as the President of the FAT until the end of his term.

Following criticism from Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Thai Olympic Committee, Mr. Prawit Wongsuwan, regarding the failure of Thailand U22 to win gold at the 32nd SEA Games, Mr. Poompanmoung announced his readiness to resign on July 1. The Thai official expressed concern that the team's performance, as well as the behavior of young players during the final, had a negative impact on the country's image.

However, during a meeting of the FAT Board of Directors, it was decided that Mr. Poompanmoung's resignation would cause significant harm to Thai football. The federation is apprehensive that FIFA might view the resignation as government interference in the affairs of the football association, potentially leading to penalties.

The FAT is particularly worried about the consequences of FIFA's response. They fear that the decision to hold FIFA's annual general meeting in Thailand next year might be revoked, and there is also concern that the country may be barred from hosting international matches.

As a result, in a meeting held on July 3, the FAT Board of Directors voted against accepting Mr. Poompanmoung's resignation. Instead, they urged him to continue in his role as President until the end of his term, which concludes in February next year. The decision aims to mitigate potential sanctions from FIFA and maintain the stability of Thai football.
