The significant difference that helped Manchester City achieve the treble in the 2022/23 season can be attributed to the presence of four tall defenders in their squad. This was further reinforced with the addition of Josko Gvardiol.

After a 3-3 draw against Newcastle at St. James's Park on August 21, Pep Guardiola left the stadium with a few thoughts in mind. Although Man City performed well, they allowed their opponents to score three goals. Guardiola quickly identified the issue—a lack of central defenders. To address this, Man City invested £15 million to acquire Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund, effectively solving their defensive problems.

The Stage of Defenders

According to estimates by MEN, Manchester City has spent over £225 million in the past seven years to enhance the quality of their defense. This figure is set to increase by £86 million (€100 million) if the club successfully secures the signing of Gvardiol from RB Leipzig, further bolstering their defensive capabilities at the Etihad Stadium.

The 2022/23 season witnessed the excellence of Man City's defense. With goalkeeper Ederson making crucial saves, such as denying Romelu Lukaku's close-range header in the UEFA Champions League final, the defensive line showcased its strength. The defensive quartet includes Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji, and John Stones. Guardiola also transformed Stones, a central defender, into a defensive midfielder—a move that proved to be one of the most impressive innovations by the Catalan strategist.

With the exception of Ake, all of Man City's central defenders have an average height of 1.83 meters or above. They stand tall like powerful giants in defense. Horizontally speaking, the central defenders of "The Citizens" appear majestic and more intimidating than any other defense witnessed at the Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola's leadership.
